To get my ham radio license, I have to give the government a mailing address that will be publicly accessible.
On the one hand, I definitely don't like the idea of my home address being searchable/scrapeable/more accessible to the federal government.
On the other, I don't really want to spend $120/yr on a PO box.
#amateurradio or #hamradio folks, any clever recommendations?
I'm temporarily working from an air-conditioned office due to the heat wave from hell, so I'm using my laptop (which I've barely touched in a year).
Thanks to Navidrome, I can stream my music library from my server and rock out. And I can brag about it here on my social network.
Self-hosting is so rad.

This is, to the letter, one of the motivating "passions" of fascism.
The Q bullshit is a violent fascist movement and we're watching it grow in real time.

I'm currently in the middle of about eight different books and all I want to do is start about that many more.
I need to finish reading some books.

Yesterday's crafting project: finally assembling my #piecepack! I did some serious redesigning this week, and sat down yesterday with my long #themagnusarchives backlog and put it all together.
I plan to release the files and create a version for sale on The Game Crafter soon.
I started a 3D print last night and woke up to find it had warped a little bit on the bottom. Not enough to ruin the print, but enough to be noticeably bothersome.
I rather wish it had been ruined, so I would feel justified in scrapping the whole thing and starting again. But since it's technically usable as-is, the real waste would be discarding a usable print because it doesn't look perfect.
Damn. 😔

in reply to Zoot Allures • •Yeah, I'm just thinking it through here. The government having my address concerns me a lot less than having an open database where anyone could easily pull up my address. When I get my call sign, I won't want to advertise it so long as my home address is on my license.
Of course, like everyone is rightly quick to point out, I'm not an interesting person, so the likelihood anyone would want to look up my address is pretty slim. But I want to be thoughtful, aware, and intentional about that regardless.

in reply to Spencer • • •I'm tempted to say "1060 West Addison Street"... They really publish your address in the US? I've never seen that done anywhere else...
As for a solution... I'd say find a friend who is not a radio amateur, preferably with a business and use that address. On the surface that looks like Wrigley Field and your friend can always deny being involved, but you still get the mail.

in reply to Olaf (gone to dapor.net) • •They do. The FCC License Search allows you to look up license-holders based on a wide array of criteria (including simply your call sign), and the address you've registered with your license is visible there.
Your idea of using a friend's address seems like a decent strategy. My read of the regulations says that isn't even forbidden—you just have to be able to receive communications from the governing body at the address you give.

in reply to Spencer • •Not to me, as some HAM gear is expensive...and having your friends house broken into looking to steal that gear isn't good....and if it ever comes down to it(which I seriously doubt) having the feds knock your friends door down and terrorize his/her family in the middle of the night doesn't sound like much fun either.....

in reply to Spencer • •But the application you sign is an official government document, and I don't know about whether or not giving a bogus address is falsifying an official government document....
I'm not saying you're right, and I'm not saying you're wrong....I am saying "I don't know"

in reply to Zoot Allures • •I appreciate your concern, but on this one, I am quite confident giving an address that is not one's place of residence is legal. From the FCC webpage with information on their universal licensing system, which the Amateur Radio Service uses:
I mean, I'm not a lawyer, but on this specific point, that seems pretty clear. The FCC asserts that they're not asking for your specific place of residence (PO boxes are okay), but an address where you can be reached.

in reply to Spencer • • •As I understand it, it doesn't have to be where you live, but it does have to be an address where you can be contacted. People who live on RVs and boats have ways around this too.
Though, before you go too far down the rabbit-hole trying to avoid this, consider whether or not your home address is already public record...

in reply to abortretryfail • •Yeah, that's my understanding as well. I may look to see if a friend or family member doesn't mind being my mailbox for this.
This is a fair point, and, like I said above, I'm wary of expanding that surface cavalierly. My address is in public records—I know because I get a lot of mortgage junk mail—but not all public records are equally accessible. Some are accessible via request to the governing agency, whereas some (like radio licensee records) are available just via an open web form.
Wary doesn't necessarily mean I won't do it, I just want to think it through, y'know?
