NEW: The CEO of the private security force Citizen is partnering with wants the power to arrest people and "take them to jail," explains how upset he gets when LAPD takes his "prisoners" from him

I wish everyone, but especially infighting leftists, grokked the concept of competing access needs.

i hate this internet pride discourse so much. deal with reality.

you might not *like* people doing kinky shit in public but it is a FACT they will be there. so will be inappropriate kinky het shit everywhere. take kids, help them cope with how the world is, or stay at home 🙆‍♀️

Your daily reminder that it doesn't matter how "pure" or "wholesome" lgbt+ representation is or how lgbt+ people behave in public. Homophobes hate us anyway. So stop shaming other lgbt+ people to appease homophobes.

Fuck all these "leftists" hand-wringing about teenagers being exposed to sexuality, and fuck this purity culture bullshit.

I expect it from the Right, but fuck me, seeing it from so-called "leftists" hurts.

“Things like due process and ‘rights’ are so messy, and rich people should just be able to summon a merc w/ an app on their phone” is saying the quiet part with a damn bullhorn.

Which makes perfect sense, because purity culture is extremely driven by anxiety when faced with a complicated world where it’s sometimes hard to know what the right thing is, and where you are frequently wrong, and do not control most of it.

One of the things I think is core to purity culture in all its manifestations is the notion that human beings aren’t really that complicated, or that it’s good to be simple and nuance is somehow a marker of impurity and badness.

And in fact? I feel like this is part of a larger flattening of sex and sexuality and what those things are and mean that is *massively* influenced by American Puritanism/purity culture, that reduces a rich and complicated thing to something two-dimensional and vaguely icky.

@Chinchillazllla I’m sick of people saying, “don’t make young queers uncomfortable at Pride.” When I was a young queer, I was terrified by men acting fem. TERRIFIED! That was my internalized homophobia, and it was on ME to get over myself, not the job of my elders to “tone it down.”

and they say that his block list grew four sizes that day

Hmm...what do all these people have in common?

in reply to Hypolite Petovan

same

I'm so exhausted by this latest wave of anti-sex "for the children" posturing coming from ostensible leftists. It's vile.

in reply to Spencer

None of these people have been close either to a pride parade nor a child. It's 100% posture on both fronts.

If the existence of trans people is knowledge restricted to adults, a lot of trans people will never make it to adulthood.

I will never forgive the entertainment industry for convincing so many people that persistence in the face of rejection is a successful courtship strategy or that a grand romantic gesture can substitute for actual two-way communication

It is understood throughout the GOP as the only way to win national elections.

@nytimes In Portland we modestly cut the police funding back to 2017 levels. According to a whistleblower in 911 dispatch, the Police starting clearing emergency calls w/o responding and GPS showed them parked in the same spot for hours. This is a stoppage by a protection racket.

Weird how $300/week in unemployment is a "handout" but $1.9 trillion in tax cuts, $800 billion in PPP and trillions to prop up the stock market is a "stimulus"

Thread about MAGA violence and calling it out. MTG's comments aren't just about Nazis. Her words are in line with a narrative of Trumpism: endorsing violence or threat of violence for political gain, a throughline from 2016 to 1/6 to disenfranchisement efforts. 1/

probably the best summary of all this nonsense discourse

I wish more places in the US adopted the Japanese strategy of having unique commemorative rubber stamps available for visitors to stamp in journals. Stamps make such a cool, low-waste memento.

Yes. Yes you do. But "the freedom to vote" is not the same as "enough voters to win elections".

This is in a New York Times article about people in rural Oregon counties who wish to secede from the state and join Idaho. They feel their interests aren't represented in the state.

I'm sympathetic to their point—I believe everyone should have as direct control as possible in the systems that govern their lives—but golly, conflating the two ideas as they have done here is very indicative of the modern American conservative movement.

in reply to Spencer

Oof, I wasn't even thinking about such a weird dick move but you are exactly right on the money.

Without the leverage of a work stoppage and public demonstrations, companies would never agree to any union demands.

Don’t be fooled: A law that doesn’t allow strikes or picketing doesn’t allow unions. #UnionStrong

These people are so desperate to uphold a white supremacist mythology about this country that they are literally introducing bills that would, in essence, compel teachers to straight up lie about how racism shaped our current society. nytimes.com/2021/05/20/us/…

In 2020, as the lockdown began, a group of tabletop content creators started playing board games together on stream.

Let's check in on them one year later and see how they're doing:

New: crime app Citizen is driving a security vehicle around LA and won't say why. Citizen confirmed to me it's part of a pilot program. The vehicle is linked to a private security company that describes itself as a "subscription law enforcement service"

This @CNN internal memo directs staff to say “Hamas-run Gaza Ministry of Health” when reporting casualty numbers. It was sent by the Jerusalem bureau chief.

This is a page straight out of Israel’s playbook. It serves to justify the attack on civilians & medical facilities

If you pay even the slightest attention, you'll see clearly, every one of these right-wing alleged free speech defenders actually believes that what they call "cancel culture" is excellent and valid and good. They just want it to stay as it always has: targeted at others.
