Which makes perfect sense, because purity culture is extremely driven by anxiety when faced with a complicated world where itās sometimes hard to know what the right thing is, and where you are frequently wrong, and do not control most of it.
One of the things I think is core to purity culture in all its manifestations is the notion that human beings arenāt really that complicated, or that itās good to be simple and nuance is somehow a marker of impurity and badness.
And in fact? I feel like this is part of a larger flattening of sex and sexuality and what those things are and mean that is *massively* influenced by American Puritanism/purity culture, that reduces a rich and complicated thing to something two-dimensional and vaguely icky.
