Part of me wants to use the Twitter connector to natively view my Twitter thread in Friendica, because that would make tweets a lot easier to share. Especially since the alternative, manually linking to tweets, is much less satisfying than seeing the actual tweet content in the feed.

Another part of me, however, is loathe to connect Friendica to Twitter, because I have so many negative, stressful associations with Twitter and I rather like how my Friendica feed can be a haven from that. 😕

in reply to Spencer

also I tweet a lot more than I post here on Motley, so there'd be a much bigger volume of stuff
in reply to Spencer

I can assuage your fears regarding this matter. The way Twitter "catches" you is by providing unrequested content. Related tweets, replies by strangers, trending topics, etc... None of these end up on Friendica through the connector, so you're left with only the people you chose to interact with by following, liking or replying. It makes Twitter way better that way.

But if I don't constantly reassure my cat that he's a good cat, how will he know?

I want little more than to tear my house's walls open to the studs, completely rewire it and add Ethernet and coaxial cables, and replace all the plaster walls with drywall.

Alas, projects like that are "expensive".

in reply to Hypolite Petovan

Mostly so I'd have more options about where to put my router.

I have not carefully thought through this plan.

in reply to Hypolite Petovan

Good question. A good ethernet cable shoudl carry all that one needs.

We do have the house partially wired when we first moved in. But, to add more would be a challenge and cost a bit. Still can dream...

My internet speed has somehow dropped to 3Mbps and I am very grouchy about it.

When the weather was still grey and chilly, I pruned our shrubs. The roses, the blueberries, and the butterfly bushes; with blades in hand, their steel harder than my resolve, I severed limbs and hoped the plants would forgive me.

Today, the spring sun shines on new growth everywhere I look.

Just finished showing my wife Arrival. Gosh, I adore this movie.
in reply to Spencer

It's a movie about courageous compassion, and I think that's amazing.

Doing some decluttering. I think I might finally be able to let this disc go.

There are new #Netrunner cards coming at the end of the month, so I'm sorting my collection in preparation.

God, I love this game.

Echoing what @Local Dad, Ben Hamill said here! I'm part of NISEI, the fan project providing ongoing support for the game, so please feel free to ask me questions as well—I love talking about Netrunner.

If you’ve ever been curious about the card game #Netrunner but never jumped in now is a great time to check it out. There’s a new-player-focused set coming out on the 28th and some other stuff. NISEI is releasing sneak peeks all month as that date approaches. The Green Level Clearance Discord is super friendly to new folks (like me). It’s never been less expensive to get into it, either, because proxies are tournament legal. AMA.

Motley is back!

Motley (and, by extension, my account) was offline for an extended period of time this weekend due to a local ice and wind storm that knocked out power for about a quarter-million people, myself included. Without power, our sump pump failed, which caused water to back up in my basement, where the server lives.

I was without power for nearly 72 hours, and without internet for an extra half-day on top of that. I finally hooked the server back up in the mostly-dry basement.

So I'm back, and Motley is back! Hello again, Fediverse.

Whoever painted this door at my veterinarian's office did not think it through all the way.

Well, a cat should definitely not be consuming any quantity of whatever that dish says it contains, either.

Under most circumstances, civilians are legally permitted to openly film on-duty police officers under the First Amendment. And while the interaction between Devermont and Fair is pretty benign, BHPD’s recent behavior suggests that at least some cops believe they can prevent themselves from being filmed or livestreamed by playing copyrighted music, which would have serious implications for more serious incidents of police misconduct.

I've been doing a fair bit of editing lately, and I am convinced almost nobody knows how to use semicolons.

Oh man, if only they shipped to (or manufactured and sold within) the US. I may be in the market for a new smartphone before long, and I like that this manufacturer aims to minimize e-waste and avoid the exploitative mining practices so common in the electronics industry.
in reply to Spencer

Yeah, a couple years ago I've looked into a potential replacement for my aging iPhone 6 GS, and the landscape of ethical mobile phobe hardware is grim in the US, the only player is Purism and they don't look very good.

[heads-up: description of injury]

Everyone please join me in shaming my cat, who clawed an inch-long (surface-level) scratch into my index finger during playtime this morning.

The idea of giving my cat access to the dark web is... concerning. 😆

if your cat often bothers you at your computer and walks all over your keyboard, it's because they're trying to join you and do what you're doing. It's a sign of affection! One way to mitigate disruption without pushing away your cat is by buying your cat their own laptop and plugging it in next to yours. make sure the laptop has wifi, a VPN, and access to the darkweb

Average annual returns for Lego sets are comparable to those of fine art, wine and stamps, according to a group of U.K. researchers, potentially making the multigenerational construction toys a relatively safe alternative asset class for investors.

@Hypolite Petovan, look at you with your fancy "safe alternative asset class"! 😉

in reply to Spencer

I’m going nowhere with my LEGO Friends sets, but I did make $350 total selling 4 late 80’s-early 90’s spaceships I put together from the first LEGO bin I found.

This is cool. I have a soft spot for Markdown, and it's nice to see an attempt made at standardizing it.

There's actually upcoming #markdown specification, and it's much more useful as a cheat-sheet than any other documents I've seen so far:

I think it's already done - I found it when using a Python module for rendering Markdown in my program as it declared compliance with CommonMark and it intrigued me 😀

The sea shanty seems like the strangest possible pick for this year’s new, hot music trend, but as a longtime sea-shanty fan (what can I say, I’m the type who read Horatio Hornblower novels in high school), I’m here to tell you that sea shanties make so much sense for this moment, right now. They’re songs with simple, blunt rhythms, meant to be easy to learn and easy to sing along with while doing the hard physical work of sailing a large fishing vessel. One person is the song leader, setting the pace and singing the verses, but the engine of the song is in the repeating chorus that everyone sings together over and over again. They are unifying, survivalist songs, designed to transform a huge group of people into one collective body, all working together to keep the ship afloat.

Motley news: Friend requests should work again!

I don't know what exactly was going on, but people had previously reported that friend requests were being weird and not working correctly.

I believe that yesterday's Friendica update should have fixed this. So go forth! Make friends!

The president never even had an account here that I could ban. đŸ€·

Mark Rosewater, head designer for Magic: The Gathering, has often said on social media that one of the hardest parts of the job is knowing things that are in the pipeline for the game, but will not be public for a year or two yet.

I am now familiar with that feeling.

in reply to Spencer

It's fun/agonizing to watch the community discuss something that you know way more about, but which is not yet public. We have such cool ideas about X! Just you wait!

Ha, not quite! My job requires me to keep confidentiality as well, but that's for medical purposes. I'm part of Project NISEI, a volunteer fan group providing ongoing support to the game of Netrunner.

today was a wild day to be out of cell service for a couple hours, tell you what

From a couple nights ago: Picture's nothing special, but I made a pandan old-fashioned. It was really tasty; simple, nutty, and sweet, with a slightly creamy mouthfeel.

@Laury Plant, this may be of interest to you. 😉

Here's to enduring.

Here's to laying deep roots.

Here's to what we build with our hands for each other, and to the loving connections that sustain us.

Lovely cover of a beautiful song. One of The Decemberists' best, in my opinion.

Indigenous people from modern day Canada and Alaska invented the first sunglasses. The oldest pair known dates back to the year 1200. They work by limiting the amount of sunlight that hits your eyes, preventing snow blindness.
These sun filters are carved from wood or animal bone or ivory

It's interesting that the laws being proposed right now regarding online sex work (such as OnlyFans) and streaming of copyright content (ex: games on Twitch) are targeting two major ways working class people can make money on their own outside if traditional ways of employment

All I want is to take like a month off of work, redecorate my office, and play Netrunner, Hades, Cities: Skylines, and Stardew Valley for a while.

hi there, just stopping in for some regularly-scheduled screaming about US politics

thank you for your time

In the distant cyberpunk future, media companies have realized that there is way more money to be made by exploiting copyright and suing users than there is in actually generating new content. Original creative output has ground to a halt. "Entertainment" is understood to be solely the domain of the Big Corps; try to create your own and you're liable to be sued into nonexistence for violating an obscure copyright.

In 2017, a Public Policy Polling Survey asked Kentuckians, “Do you approve or disapprove of Senator Mitch McConnell’s job performance?” Only 18% approved. He clawed his rating back up to 39% on the eve of the election.

...So, what exactly drove these angry Kentuckians to reelect Mitch McConnell with a 19-point advantage over opponent Amy McGrath—57.8% to 38.2%?

Even as Republicans across the country still insist that the election was rife with fraudulent Democratic votes, no one’s asking how McConnell managed one of the most lopsided landslides of the Nov. 3 election. They should. An investigation of Kentucky voting results by DCReport raises significant questions about the vote tallies in McConnell’s state.

My wife and I are watching recent Miley Cyrus music videos, and it's going to be so weird to rewatch these in two (or twenty) years and see all the musicians in the ensemble wearing sleek black masks.

Very probable, but far from beying certain it was Russian action. People saying that without any doubt do not have enough knowledge OR manipulate the reader

"Illegal math" sounds dripped directly from a 1960s dystopian novel, but it's being pushed for my many governments around the world.

Banning (non-backdoored) cryptography makes certain math illegal.

I can't even think of anything to add. That really speaks for itself.
