I have a particular fondness for trying plant-based meat substitutes, just out of sheer curiosity. I'm a meat-eater, but my wife's a vegetarian, and there are definitely environmental benefits to limiting meat consumption, so I like trying different things out.

I grabbed a pouch of Gardein plant-based jerky from Grocery Outlet today, not expecting much. It's basically marinated seitan. And it's surprisingly good. Chewy, proteins, very umami. It's not quite meat-like, but close enough! Really tasty snack.

I know everyone loves popcorn-following /r/AmITheAsshole and /r/relationships, but I feel like y'all are missing out on /r/sociology, where the content is about 10% sociological academia, 50% homework help and discussions from students, and 40% off-the-wall batshit soapbox rants from people who have no connection to the field but want to pontificate about how they think society should run.

Little in board gaming brings me more joy than the words "Install, advance, advance," said while staring your opponent dead in the eyes.

Netrunner is such a good game.

the xylophone in the chorus of "WTF Do I Know" has absolutely no right to rock that hard BUT IT DOES

Capitalism reduced cyberpunk to nothing more than a marketable aesthetic and that will always infuriate me.
in reply to Spencer

The OEmbed on Kickstarter posts is so weird. I just wanted to link to this project.

it's only cyberpunk if it's actually _punk_
if it isn't a criticism of capitalism and the protags are all cishet white guys that's just sparkling neon scifi

The most unpopular FCC chairman in history has announced he will step down.

It's tempting to forget he ever existed. But hear me out

We need to #MakeAjitPaiAMeme

His smug face should become a meme, a cautionary tale of what happens when we don't hold our government accountable

Going all-in on my altar this week because I need every bit of extra strength I can find.

A small altar on a black ceramic tile, featuring a stick of incense, a glass goblet of water, a crow’s feather, and an iridescent geode. On the left is a sigil written in black marker on an index card and on the right is a tarot card: the Seven of Wands.

Seven of Wands:

Hold your ground. You are under attack from multiple angles, but your perseverance and strength will keep you on top so long as you don’t waver. This will be a trial, but it is one you can endure. Do not compromise your values. You can make it.

oh my god it's an office chair for bisexuals

(since Friendica is being a little weird with the embed, here's a link to the Kickstarter page)

I got a beautiful new tarot deck that I'm so excited to have, but in just a week of normal shuffling and use, it's already showing scuffs and damage. The printed layer is separating really easily from the core.

Boooo, I am disappoint.

I only swear by sleeves if I want to shuffle cards without damaging them. Sorry about the disappointment.

Yeah, I hadn't thought about sleeving my tarot cards, but I may in the future. A very peculiar intersection of my board-gaming and weird secular occult hobbies. 😂

My wife and I are rewatching Broadchurch, and my goodness, this show is so good at depicting the agony of a small community turning on itself.

I've only seen the first season, but it's excellent. Quite dramatic and sad, though; we actually had to turn it off last night because watching a community tear itself apart was so painful. Turns out we weren't in the mood for that last night.

Startin' my morning by dropping three Friendica bug reports. 😎🐛

My kingdom for clean, full-color SVGs of the original Rider-Waite-Smith tarot card illustrations.

I keep watching this damn video. Brian David Gilbert is delightful.

I got a new set of D&D-themed oracle cards, called The Adventurer's Tarot, and they are just breathtakingly gorgeous:

Emily Willet doesn't like this.

in reply to Spencer

I actually thought this WAS a tarot deck when I backed it so I opened it looking for the suits and got very confused. But that makes sense! I guess it's whatever you make of it. How do you interpret the cards that have two versions? Is one of them like the "reversed" card maybe?

Also on the topic of oracle decks generally, here's something I happened to come across today that might interest you! autostraddle.com/fools-journey…

in reply to Miri Mogilevsky

I think if I were doing a proper reading, I'd pare the deck down to have only one copy of each card. Your idea of treating certain color schemes as "reversed" could also work! I would find that challenging because some of the color differences are fairly subtle, like for II - The Monk or V - The Rogue.

I opened Facebook, saw three posts about the US presidential debates, and immediately felt my heart rate spike.

Looks like I'm taking the night off of Facebook! Glad I have Motley here. ❤️

in reply to Spencer

I've never been a big FB user. Reading a little, but posting, rarely.

I can only imagine the pages and pages of posts and comments on this debate! I'll avoid it for now;-)

Just looked at some projects on Github and saw that the site no longer advertises a standard git command to copy for repo cloning. Now they encourage the use of 'Github CLI' with the syntax of 'gh repo clone'.

No doubt it's a wrapper around git that will slowly gain features that git won't add because there is no need for them.

They are no longer a 'git hub', they are a 'repo space'.

All leading to the classic, Embrace, Extend, Extinguish.

I genuinely feel sorry for any of my friends who are still playing Magic: The Gathering. Wizards of the Coast/Hasbro has been losing the community's faith for a while, mostly due to shoddy game balance, but today they delivered a one-two punch of announcements that really drive home how little they care about the game's health, compared to opportunities for short-term profits.

That's not a mocking form of pity, either. I genuinely mean it; I'm sorry for those who love this game more than the company running it.

Thank you for the elaboration (and the links!), interesting power dynamics. As for the Secret Lair x TWD cards, the rule text margins look wrong, they feel like custom cards people create for fun to me.

I never played competitively so I don't think this kind of news would have affected me even at the height of my cardboard collection frenzy in high school, but yeah, I can see how both these decisions would aggravate engaged customers.

in reply to Spencer

I'm not sure there is anything more On-Brand™ for me than what I'm doing now: hanging out in the MTG subreddit, trying to gently fan the flames of people's frustration with corporate decisions into anti-corporate class consciousness. 🙃

Republicans: Forcing former prisoners to pay their fines just to be able to vote is not a poll tax, what are you talking about! It's not like a poll tax!

Also republicans: please investigate bloomberg for giving money to voters to pay our definitely not a poll tax
State CFO Jimmy Patronis also called on Wednesday for an inquiry into Bloomberg's effort, asking the Federal Election Commission to investigate whether Bloomberg is "breaking the law by giving direct cash for voters."

hi y’all, i work for a healthcare org in the u.s. and i wanted to share what the current conversation is internally around covid.

the vaccine will not be signaling the end of social distancing. only 1/3rd of americans polled currently say they would get the vaccine, and the FDA is going to pass the first vaccine that hits the 50% effectiveness mark.

these numbers do not indicate that we will be able to “beat” the virus w/ a vaccine.

"If people's basic needs were met through socialism, nobody would ever choose to work!"

Kid, there's people who saved up their entire lives to retire, and never have to work again

Who then choose to spend their retirement doing unpaid menial labor for the public library

People generally WANT to work, to feel accomplished from Doing Stuff

They just want to get to do work they choose to do willingly, for reasonable amounts of time, without the threat of starvation looming over them

"In short, federation distributes governance and cost, and can allow us to tackle challenges that we couldn’t overcome without it. The free software community needs to rally behind federation, because no one else will. For all of the reasons which make it worth doing, it is not rewarding for corporations. They would much rather build walled gardens and centralize, centralize, centralize — it’s more profitable!"

Thanks, @Andrew, for sharing this elsewhere. It's what I need this morning.

Now would be a great time to get off the fedi and start a new show or book

And copyright. Look, it gets there in the end.

Thanks, Hypolite, that's really kind of you to say. I'm glad the weird world of federated social media has allowed our paths to cross. 😊
in reply to Spencer

I'm glad as well. It doesn't help my social media echo chamber, but since this is a concept conservatives came up to chide liberals for not being more open to conservative ideas, I do not care in the slightest.

Refusal looks like millions of people using nonviolent tools to delegitimize the coup by demonstrating, resisting orders, and shutting down the country until democracy prevails.

This is a useful website for the nightmare scenario. We're a month and a half out--it's definitely time to start making actual plans for the coup attempt that's nearly guaranteed.
