Just a friendly reminder that if you store your government ID on your phone and find yourself in a situation where you have to show them your ID, you'll have to hand them your unlocked phone to do it.

Here's a case where a man got shot for reaching for his phone, the officer involved thought it was a gun.

"Hold on sir, don't unlock that. There have been reports of people triggering explosives with their phones. Hand it to me and give me your passcode."

This is easy as fuck. I could come up with 10 bullshit excuses to make you unlock your phone in as many minutes.

Don't give cops a reason to take your phone. Your recording is likely your only protection.

cnn.com/2018/03/22/us/sacramen…

in reply to Rod Hilton

Goddamn even if the cops leave the phone locked to view the ID, they'll just pocket the phone afterwards and "give it back to you when we're done here" - you willingly handed it over to them, they can keep it.

Now they know you can't be recording them. You want to hand over the one thing that they know might keep them honest?

Are people just not paying attention? How the fuck can anyone be in favor of this? You want your ID on your phone so bad, get a sticky ID holder and slap it on the back.

When we talk about how billionaires shouldn’t exist I don’t think people really understand the massive difference in scale between a million and a billion. One million seconds is 12 days. A billion seconds is 31 years. It’s an unfathomable amount of money that no one should have. Even uber-rich mega millionaires - hundreds of millions - really shouldn’t exist. We need to tax the rich; they’re the real free loaders. They’re the drains on the economy. They’re the ones dragging society down.

I currently don't know anyone with this profile there, but perhaps this toot can be boosted?

Here's how I would suggest looking at the graphic below:

During the first 960 pages of a 1000-page book you're reading, humans live in harmony with their ecosystem, taking what they need to live and basically fitting in with the rest of nature.

Slowly things begin to get a little out of balance near the end, over the final 30 pages or so. But it's not until the very last page — the LAST PAGE of a 1000-page book — that humans decide, okay, we've been good long enough, it's time to dig all the carbon out of the Earth, burn it up, and destroy everything. Let's go!!!

You and I are "lucky" enough to be alive on the final page of the book. Will there be a sequel, or is this it?

I Lost My Talk by Rita Joe

I lost my talk
The talk you took away.
When I was a little girl
At Shubenacadie school.

You snatched it away:
I speak like you
I think like you
I create like you
The scrambled ballad, about my word.

Two ways I talk
Both ways I say,
Your way is more powerful.

So gently I offer my hand and ask,
Let me find my talk
So I can teach you about me.

Willow oak acorns, Quercus phellos 1/

Surprisingly delicious!

After cold processing, they taste like the smell of fresh hay, wheat and hulled sunflower seeds.

With heat processing, they taste like walnuts with a tinge of bitterness.

This thread demonstrates how to cold-process the acorns and different ways of using them. Read the AltText for more details.

9/ Acorn chawan-mushi. This recipe is adapted from "chawan-mushi" from Tsuji's Japanese Cooking. p.214. I put the egg mixture into very tiny cups so I wouldn't have to cook the mixture too long. I wanted to retain the flavour of the raw acorns. The cups were steamed less than 8 minutes on the second tier of a bamboo basket and the acorns tasted very peanut-y here. Was good.

There is no way to solve #climatechange with #capitalism ... Capitalism values only what labor can provide, and hoards the profits in an investor class. Solutions will come in the form of products: EVs, induction stoves, carbon removal startups. But trees in the ground, animals, art, disabilities, your loves and joys, your life, have no value unless they can be sold. Capitalism requires buying or dying.

Meet the #rainboweucalyptus.

These #gums are unbeliebable.

When a rainbow eucalyptus sheds its bark it reveals a neon green inner layer. Over time, as this layer is exposed to air, it ages into different colors. They display bright reds, oranges, blues, pinks and purples.

The different colours appear as different layers fall off, while other exposed areas begin aging.

Rainbow eucalyptus is the only eucalyptus tree native to the #northernhemisphere.

It’s found mainly in the Philippines, New Guinea, and Indonesia.

And funny enough, it is not native to #Australia!

Closing thread on 2022.

One definition of privilege is when you think something isn't a problem because it isn't a problem for you. We improve society by being conscious and aware of our privilege, and being sensitive to the struggles of others. This is a difficult exercise, but this struggle against injustice is the true Jihad.

For example...

Males drop their antlers after the Autumn mating season. So since the world’s most celebrated reindeer are always depicted with spectacular antlers, we must assume that the intrepid team pulling the sleigh, presents & Ol’ St. Nicholas himself, is entirely female. #science

December 22
During the Middle Ages, rosemary was spread on the floor at Christmas because it repelled evil spirits. The scent drifted through the home and It was said that anyone breathing the fragrance on Christmas Eve would receive happiness during the coming year. I would love if this could happen in my home but I feel modern practicalities might reduce my enjoyment & the cat would eat too much of it.

The kirin is a #yokai from #JapaneseFolklore that originated in China. It looks part deer & part horse with dragon scales. This beautiful, gentle creature harms nothing & is a strict vegetarian. It's seen as an omen of luck & great fortune. In case you're wondering why you haven't seen one lately it's because this benevolent creature only appears during periods of world peace. Also they're only seen in the lands of wise & nobel leaders.
