If you want to understand #ElonMusk, you have to understand the Myth of the Secret Genius.

He's part of a group of people who are rich partly because they convince others that they are secret geniuses.

Many still falsely believe we live in a meritocratic society, in which riches are purely a marker of talent rather than of luck or generational wealth.

Sometimes, the emperor just has no clothes. I explain here: https://open.substack.com/pub/brianklaas/p/the-myth-of-the-secret-genius?r=1maga&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email

Power attracts information. An often overlooked benefit of prominence is that one gains preferential access to information. A mediocre thinker, given more and better information, can beat a genius.

Every day, all day long, people ask Musk "Have you seen this?" "Have you seen that?" While the less prominent genius is alone in his apartment digging through academic papers and the press trying to find hints that could inspire the use of his talent.
phenomenal bit of work. Highly recommended. Very, worthwhile read.

Much of my early childhood grooming was in the form of Dr Seuss books. Over my journey I have seen the mistakes made in the books play out in real life. The one that I have seen play out maybe the most is "Yertle the Turtle". Once again true to form it is playing out again with Mr Musk playing the part of Yertle - The king of all he can see. I can hardly wait for the ending of this story.

Here’s what Mayor Anne Hidalgo knew when she took office in 2014:

It wasn’t the hills, weather or culture that was preventing Parisians from cycling; it was a lack of safe infrastructure.

With that revelation—and some immense courage—she has unleashed a revolution in the city.

Paris Respire (“Paris Breathes”) is the name of the open streets program started in May 2016 to reduce fine particle emissions.

Corridors across the city go completely car-free on Sundays, with a special edition on the first of each month on the iconic Avenue des Champs Elysées.

Is cycling in Paris still quite uncomfortable? Its network indirect and—at times—incoherent? Are there still too many cars? Absolutely.

But it’s tackling these challenges with a level of resource and commitment not seen in most cities. We’re excited to watch its progress unfold.

From @pluralistic:

"Earlier this year, many people with Argus optical implants – which allow blind people to see – lost their vision when the manufacturer, Second Sight, went bust.

"Nano Precision Medical, the company's new owners, aren't interested in maintaining the implants, so that's the end of the road for everyone with one of Argus's 'bionic' eyes. The $150,000 per eye that those people paid is gone, and they have failing hardware permanently wired into their nervous systems.

"Having a bricked eye implant doesn't just rob you of your sight – many Argus users experience crippling vertigo and other side effects of nonfunctional implants. The company has promised to 'do our best to provide virtual support' to people whose Argus implants fail – but no more parts and no more patches."

Diabetics organized something close to "implant hacking" with the #WeAreNotWaiting movement. They hack glucose monitoring devices, write better open source software to replace proprietary ones and create open source self regulated insulin pumps ("closed loops"). https://www.techrepublic.com/article/wearenotwaiting-diabetics-are-hacking-their-health-because-traditional-systems-have-failed-them/
Absolutely. Lots of details on my blog's diabetes section. https://www.hanselman.com/blog/category/diabetes I've been hacking diabetes sensors since 1994

Think about this.

White supremacists terrorized Black & Indigenous people for 300 years, & when that terror was finally made illegal, white rebel groups rose up to further terrorize Black & Indigenous people for another 100 years, & while zero reparations were paid to remedy that 400 years of terror, now to simply acknowledge that 400 year terror is called the "woke virus."

White privilege is when the cancer of white supremacy is to be ignored—but recalling that history is called "a virus." 😐
And sadly, individuals like Stephen Miller are proactively making cases in court to undo what little progress that has been made based on an argument that it’s discriminatory to white people. It just boggles the mind.

For any trans people who need to hear this:

Your body is beautiful. You're worthy of being desired, if that's something you want.

Whether you choose to transition (and in whatever direction you want), and wherever you are in that process -- you're seen, you are believed, and I'm proud to be your sibling.

When you look in the mirror, you deserve to hear, "Hey, Beautiful." If you don't hear it in your voice, hear it in mine.

Your strength is incredible. You come from a long tradition of transgender people, stretching back to the earliest days of humanity.

Let the haters shout into the void. You don't need to. The Void already loves you. ✨

I think also it must be said: whether you choose to transition *or not*. There are also myriad reasons people do not transition, but they are also valid.

Hello Fediverse!

I'm sharing a thing that I hope can be the beginning for many conversations, and represents for me a statement that is the result of many years of conversation:

https://slocanstatement.org/

I call it the #slocanstatement, and I'm sharing it here first, in public, in the spirit of the Fediverse.

I hope you'll read it, share it if you think it's a valuable statement, and comment and revise it towards building consensus across the Fediverse.

Elinor Ostrom won the Nobel in economics, though she was a political scientist, for her carefully gathered evidence that the "tragedy of the commons" is not inevitable & that communities that successfully govern common resources (water, fisheries, forests, etc) use 8 design principles. I like this brief explanation that specifically mentions #onlinecommunities

Sharing one of my favorite poems since childhood.

By the 12thc warrior poet Xin Qiji 辛棄疾, who was sidelined during peacetime, demoted, drifting through a decade of minor posts in remote lands.

Poetry, then, is that which is left unsaid.
“My, what a cool and lovely autumn.”

- I read it aloud and write a bit more about the poet, and the translation choices that I made, here: https://quotomania.simplecast.com/episodes/quotomania-308-xin-qiji

Also, are there people who have been super active in the #mastodon community for years who are interested in talking to reporters? A lot of reporters are asking me about mastodon because of my generalized expertise in tech policy / content moderation / decentralization, but ... I'm new here! I don't want to speak on behalf of a community i've just joined. Hmu if you know folks who would be good for this.
if they're at all interested in learning about the fediverse as a whole, and the ActivityPub standard that underlies it, @cwebber could possibly help (if she's interested!)
Oh hey it's @shauna !

And also @evangreer we've never spoken but I'm a big fan, even though from a distance!
