I know this is gonna sound very "there is no spoon"... but there is no Mastodon. At least, not in the way that there's a Twitter. Mastodon is not a single garden with well-defined walls, all owned and controlled by a single entity.
Mastodon is, literally, a program that almost any computer could run. And when that program runs, it joins a network of hundreds or thousands of other computers, all of whom can communicate with one another. This is what we call the "#Fediverse", which is short for "federated universe"—a rich ecosystem of different independent projects, each communicating with one another using a common language.
Ever think about how you don't need to know your friends' cell phone carriers to call them? You might use Sprint, and they might use T-Mobile, but we can talk to each other seamlessly because phone calls are handled via a common standard.
Or think about email: your friend might have a Hotmail account, and you might use ProtonMail—but you can email each other regardless. You don't have to create a new account on each "email service". You can just email each other.
Mastodon and the Fediverse operate on that principle. There is no Big Mastodon, just like there is no Big Email or Big Phone Calls. That means that what you're experiencing is a much smaller, collaborative (even a little anarchic) endeavor... one that is resistant by design to walled gardens and corporate control.
Things run differently here. I know this technical jargon might be a bit more than many people are used to thinking of, but when you sit with what it means, I think it illustrates that the internet has a lot more possibility than the collection of walled gardens it has become in 2022.
This week, I'm trying to lean into the variable nature of my attention. I can continue to chide myself for having more projects than time and regret not being able to work on them all... and, if I want to make progress on any of them, it might be useful for me to simply acknowledge those automatic judgments and take the inspiration when it hits.
(I'm constantly trying to help my clients develop similar perspectives; maybe there's a little bit of "Counselor, heal thyself" going on here.)
That's how I got system emails working again here on my server yesterday. I think my next focus this week might be making progress on my website redesign. That sounds fun.
As the spouse of a local journalist and someone who considers himself fairly leftist in philosophy, I really wish leftists would be a bit more specific when they tar all journalists with the brush they use for CNN talking heads or New York Times editors.
Journalism as an institution is not above criticism, and the criticisms of these big national or international consent-manufacturers is rarely applicable to local journalists. A world without local journalists—which we're fast heading toward—is a scary one indeed.
The last time I tried using my butter keeper, I ended up with butter shot through with veins of blue mold, and it smelled an awful lot like blue cheese.
But it's the dark months and I want soft butter on my toast and scones, so we'll see if I can do better this time around.
New in Mastodon 4.0 and already in place in some other forks such as Glitch soc and so on is the ability to follow hashtags as if they were people. I went to the search and followed #cats #caturday #catsofmastodon and #catpics and haven't regretted it for a moment. You'll get lots on your timeline if you do that. If you don't have that feature yet, you can usually add them to tabs in the advanced view and to a separate tab in some mobile clients.

Interesting. I was attempting to allow for that with the mention of other forks just as glitch, but I didn't know there were non-forks that were still federating with Mastodon through ActivityPub. (I'd also never heard of Friendica.) That's nifty! In any case, yeah, I have no idea if you can follow hash tags on Friendica or not. And because of how federation works, leaving a server for another doesn't shut you out of the network altogether. You can hop to a server that better fits what you're looking for and still participate.
As a result, the average person using the Fediverse has a level of control over their experience that just isn't possible on Big Social sites.
Federated social media shows us how our online experiences don't have to look like the corporate, centralized models we've grown accustomed to.
I've noticed that there's a lot less drive-by snark on the Fediverse, and I really appreciate that.
The Twitter culture of reflexively responding to strangers with hostile snark is so grating. I find it grossly antisocial—if you were to do that in person, you'd be rightly considered an asshole, but it's just what we do on Twitter because... it gets engagement, I guess. People get cheered on when they make a sweet dunk, so there's an incentive to prove you can be clever and punchy by snapping at easy targets.
Here on the Fediverse, or at least in the corners I inhabit, I feel there's a bit more understanding that normal social rules don't go out the window just because we're behind screens. I value that.
"the corner you inhabit" is the important part. You had to block several whole instances from interacting with your own to reach this corner. It's both a boon that you can do it, and a curse that you have to do it, but it's worth it in the end.
In the #PNW, there are two fast food chains called Taco Time. I learned this several years ago, but because I've only ever lived in the territory of the "lesser" one, the distinction felt academic.

When I read people asking, vis a vis Twitter and Mastodon, "Where are people supposed to go if they want a big built-in audience?", my heart falls a little.
I don't think the scale of Twitter is at all desirable. I don't want another Twitter, I want smaller communities, even if that means I can't broadcast my thoughts to every far corner of the internet. In fact, especially because I can't do that.
Twitter is full of "doing anything on Mastodon is so hard" jokes and memes right now and I don't want to be the guy 'splaining it, but c'mon, it really isn't that much more complicated than Twitter, it really isn't.
Like, I understand the complexity of choosing servers is a step beyond what it takes to sign up for a centralized service, but writing a post is not fundamentally different than drafting a tweet, it doesn't require a cyberpunk holo-keyboard or a Master's degree.
There are a couple of people who have made personas from how much Twitter is a hellsite who also immediately began dunking on people moving to the Fediverse, and it feels so... crabs-in-a-bucket to me.
"This is a hellsite, but anyone who likes this somewhat viable alternative is a hypernerd" is the vibe I'm getting, which I find quite disagreeable. Mastodon and the Fediverse aren't perfect, by any stretch, and they definitely aren't a seamless transition from Twitter—so I can understand criticism—but "People who like Mastodon are brainy nerds who don't realize how incredibly complex their interest is" isn't criticism, it's just... dunking. That's not helping anyone.
I had just over 1000 followers in the other place, but even at that relatively small scale, it had me second guessing what I should be posting - mostly for fear of antagonising someone (not talking about controversial push button topics here) to the point that I’d regularly talk myself out of posting at all.
With a smaller group of engaged people, i worry a lot less - if I were to mess up in some way, it feels like there’s the space to converse about these things and draw out nuance.
I know that feeling! I experienced the same thing.
For some reason—perhaps in part because I run this joint—I also feel a lot more comfortable here deciding the rules of my engagement with others. My personal policy is "Arguing with me is a privilege reserved for those I already have an established relationship," and I feel much more comfortable enforcing that boundary here. Though I've also had much less occasion to do so, blessedly!
It just happened! I made a comment trying to say, "Hey, this tweet about Mastodon users is a little mean-spirited, and if the Fediverse is intimidating to you, I'm happy to help get you situated."
I immediately got two snarky responses from a random stranger, first quote tweeting a dril tweet at me, then saying "it's a website, it doesn't have feelings and it's okay to mock it".
That sort of drive-by snark at randos is one of the things I hate most about what Twitter has enabled.
yup exactly that. It’s so low effort and an obvious consequence of how the numbers influence the algorithm. Implicitly rewards nasty “zings” over furthering actual understanding.
I am not unsympathetic to those who are confused because they've never had to think of servers and the architecture of the internet before, but I start losing patience when that becomes establishing a narrative that everything on Mastodon is super complicated.
Out at the symphony tonight and caught the premiere of The Right to Be Forgotten, a folk opera in one act by Gabriel Kahane about technology and connection. It wasn't my favorite thing musically, but I was really appreciative of the message.

I'm Spencer (he/they). I run Motley, which is my name for this little Friendica instance. It's mostly just me here these days, although I still have dreams of one day helping my friends find digital community here.
I made myself a home on the Fediverse because I wanted to distance myself from the big corporate services. I care about #decentralization and #selfhosting, as I believe more people running smaller personal servers will help break the stranglehold of big tech companies.
My ideal world is one much freer of coercive hierarchies. It's smaller-scale, more cooperative and communal, and more deeply connected to the earth. I'm kinda #solarpunk, I suppose. I care about freedom, tempered with an ethic of compassion for one another and the world we live in. I also practice #polyamory. I find that inextricable from my values.
I dabble in way too many hobbies, and it's delightful. I love #boardgames, especially #Netrunner, which I maintain is the best game ever. I'm a member of the volunteer fan organization keeping that game alive—ask me about it and I'll gladly talk your ear off. I enjoy amateur #mixology. I started learning #lockpicking last year, and am also working on becoming licensed as a #hamradio operator. I'm interested in community-focused approaches to #preparedness, because I don't think the odds are good for the uncomplicated continuation of this late-capitalist "normal", and when things start to fall apart, I don't want myself, my family, or my communities to be caught off-guard.
Over the last couple of years, my own spiritual growth has taken me in a location that might look bizarre from the outside: I still firmly identify as a secular humanist who does not believe in the supernatural, yet I'm also increasingly an intentional practitioner of "#magick". I occasionally read #tarot for myself, have cast a couple of spells in my time, and generally see the playful fantasy of magick as psychologically useful and spiritually rewarding. I run a Friendica forum about it, in fact, though, like many things here on Motley, it's fairly dried up.
My posting is eclectic, and I tend to share to a followers-only audience by default. I strongly believe that arguing with me is a privilege reserved for those I already have a relationship with, so I have very little patience for strangers who comment on my posts in an attempt to provoke a debate. I don't know you—why would I waste my time and energy in a fight I don't know is safe? This is my little corner of the Fediverse, and I choose not to spend it interacting with fascists, bigots, conspiracy theorists, Web3 shills, or generally anyone I find unpleasant. Because of that, I'm slow to accept follow requests until I can peruse your public profile and get a sense of who you are.
I'm sure I could go on forever (haha already have), but that probably gives a good start. I'm always down for new connections, since that's what makes the Fediverse thrive.

If I try to update something from my YunoHost admin panel, the GET request usually leads to a timeout.
I've fiddled with Nginx settings. I've tried to increase PHP-FPM settings. FastCGI seems to be implicated. I'm messing with all these config files for programs I don't understand on multiple machines and I can't figure out, for the life of me, why sending a few emails via SMTP relay would be so resource-intensive that my server would not only think for several minutes, but choke up in doing so.

I want to never again see an Nginx "upstream timed out" error. These are the bane of my amateur-server-admin existence and I can't for the life of me seem to quash them. 😩
I am frustrated enough with my current hacked-together email relay system for my home server (which largely doesn't work) and curious enough that I'm strongly considering setting up a little Mail-in-a-Box instance on some rented cloud storage space. And yes, I recognize that anything involving self-hosted email is usually met with a chorus of "Email is dark sorcery, don't do it!" 😂

I've been hosting my own email for over 10 years now. I originally used Hmailserver for Windows, switched to mail in a box couple years ago but only used it for about 1 year. I'm currently using modoboa and it's been fine and solid ever since. It's pretty much the same stack as mail in a box.
I'm not. I originally used Amazon SES, which worked fine for years. I recently started using sendgrid and they're free tier is just fine for me. I basically relay through their SMTP server. DKIM is configured on my DNS to make emails appear to come from me.
i've used it and would again if i ever went back to selfhosting, which after two decades of same i can only imagine doing under severe duress
make sure to keep it up to date to avoid time consuming manual migration headaches. follow all deliverability advice with great care to minimize the frequency with which your mail is randomly blackholed by one or another of the three providers everyone else uses. good luck

Even though I don't understand a damn thing about Go, I actually had pretty decent luck translating it into a Hugo template! There are a lot of fiddly bits left to do, and I need to build some more page designs, but I'm beginning to see the shape of this project.

"How can I make a feed of exactly what I want to see?" is a solved problem. The answer is RSS.
But you can't sell that. So instead, we now spend hours of our precious human lives forking over personal data to these behemoth corporations so they can attempt to build profiles of us which they can sell, and the end result is that sometimes, they manage to show us a feed that partially consists of what we want to see.
Tried a new (to me) recipe for an old-fashioned tonight and it is easily the best old-fashioned I've ever made. Nothing fancy, no frills, just exactly what I expect from this cocktail.
2 oz. whiskey 0.25 oz. 1:1 simple syrup 3-4 dashes Angostura bitters 1 twist orange peel
Stir liquid ingredients with ice. Twist orange peel over the glass to express the oils, then drop it in.
What recipe was I using earlier, if this was so notable to me? My bartending bible tends to be Mittie Helmich's Ultimate Bar Book, whose old-fashioned starts with muddled fruit. I'm a fan of that approach sometimes, but this recipe makes a much cleaner, crisper, simpler drink, and it's definitely the template I'm going to use in the future.
If you use Venmo, a recent update to their Terms of Service includes a binding arbitration clause. Continuing to use the service means waiving your right to a class-action lawsuit and a court trial.
If you don't like that, you have the option to opt out of the binding arbitration, but you have to do so quickly (by the middle of May 2022, roughly). This article has more information.
