Motley is back!
Motley (and, by extension, my account) was offline for an extended period of time this weekend due to a local ice and wind storm that knocked out power for about a quarter-million people, myself included. Without power, our sump pump failed, which caused water to back up in my basement, where the server lives.
I was without power for nearly 72 hours, and without internet for an extra half-day on top of that. I finally hooked the server back up in the mostly-dry basement.
So I'm back, and Motley is back! Hello again, Fediverse.

Under most circumstances, civilians are legally permitted to openly film on-duty police officers under the First Amendment. And while the interaction between Devermont and Fair is pretty benign, BHPD’s recent behavior suggests that at least some cops believe they can prevent themselves from being filmed or livestreamed by playing copyrighted music, which would have serious implications for more serious incidents of police misconduct.

Everyone please join me in shaming my cat, who clawed an inch-long (surface-level) scratch into my index finger during playtime this morning.
Average annual returns for Lego sets are comparable to those of fine art, wine and stamps, according to a group of U.K. researchers, potentially making the multigenerational construction toys a relatively safe alternative asset class for investors.
@Hypolite Petovan, look at you with your fancy "safe alternative asset class"! 😉

This is cool. I have a soft spot for Markdown, and it's nice to see an attempt made at standardizing it.

The sea shanty seems like the strangest possible pick for this year’s new, hot music trend, but as a longtime sea-shanty fan (what can I say, I’m the type who read Horatio Hornblower novels in high school), I’m here to tell you that sea shanties make so much sense for this moment, right now. They’re songs with simple, blunt rhythms, meant to be easy to learn and easy to sing along with while doing the hard physical work of sailing a large fishing vessel. One person is the song leader, setting the pace and singing the verses, but the engine of the song is in the repeating chorus that everyone sings together over and over again. They are unifying, survivalist songs, designed to transform a huge group of people into one collective body, all working together to keep the ship afloat.

Motley news: Friend requests should work again!
I don't know what exactly was going on, but people had previously reported that friend requests were being weird and not working correctly.
I believe that yesterday's Friendica update should have fixed this. So go forth! Make friends!
Mark Rosewater, head designer for Magic: The Gathering, has often said on social media that one of the hardest parts of the job is knowing things that are in the pipeline for the game, but will not be public for a year or two yet.
I am now familiar with that feeling.

From a couple nights ago: Picture's nothing special, but I made a pandan old-fashioned. It was really tasty; simple, nutty, and sweet, with a slightly creamy mouthfeel.
@Laury Plant, this may be of interest to you. 😉
Here's to enduring.
Here's to laying deep roots.
Here's to what we build with our hands for each other, and to the loving connections that sustain us.

In 2017, a Public Policy Polling Survey asked Kentuckians, “Do you approve or disapprove of Senator Mitch McConnell’s job performance?” Only 18% approved. He clawed his rating back up to 39% on the eve of the election....So, what exactly drove these angry Kentuckians to reelect Mitch McConnell with a 19-point advantage over opponent Amy McGrath—57.8% to 38.2%?
Even as Republicans across the country still insist that the election was rife with fraudulent Democratic votes, no one’s asking how McConnell managed one of the most lopsided landslides of the Nov. 3 election. They should. An investigation of Kentucky voting results by DCReport raises significant questions about the vote tallies in McConnell’s state.

I have a particular fondness for trying plant-based meat substitutes, just out of sheer curiosity. I'm a meat-eater, but my wife's a vegetarian, and there are definitely environmental benefits to limiting meat consumption, so I like trying different things out.
I grabbed a pouch of Gardein plant-based jerky from Grocery Outlet today, not expecting much. It's basically marinated seitan. And it's surprisingly good. Chewy, proteins, very umami. It's not quite meat-like, but close enough! Really tasty snack.
