Let me be crystal clear. Yes, antisemitism is rising. The overwhelming vast majority of it is coming from the right. This should be understood w/in the worldwide rise of fascism. Criticism of Israeli crimes by members of Congress is NOT antisemitism.
We're clearly moving toward a new system in which statewide votes in many red and purple states are refashioned into recommendations to the gerrymandered GOP state legislature. Which then chooses the president, senator, secy of state etc etc. Rinse, repeat.
Violent crime typically shoots up when economic devastation and massive, sustained national trauma occurs. I think one reason many of the current attacks on police reform don’t have as much purchase as they could’ve is b/c a normal person can tell what happened since March 2020
I'm back from a week at my mom's house and now I'm getting ads for her toothpaste brand, the brand I've been putting in my mouth for a week. We never talked about this brand or googled it or anything like that.
As a privacy tech worker, let me explain why this is happening. 🧵
Cold take: it's pretty fucked up that the "proper" way to unfuck the USA's democracy is "win against overwhelming odds repeatedly and by large enough margins to overturn permanent minority rule by white bigots. And don't you dare break even one window in the process."
They don’t know what CRT is but don’t need to because their people don’t either. They could just as easily rail against teaching the Standard Theory in physics. The point was to turn an academic school of thought into a catch-all phrase that conjures everything people fear.
The GOP, deeply enmeshed in violent white nationalism and xenophobia, has decided to go on the offensive. By attacking antiracism they’re changing the subject away from the racial arson they’ve encouraged. The attacks on “critical race theory” are central to this.
They're maneuvering to steal the 2024 election. There's no secret plan, no anonymous sources or leaked documents -- it's just all right out in the open -- so we seem unable to treat it as an important story, or call it what it is.
people trading increasingly lurid stories of "and I heard, in their parades, they put their WHOLE ARMS up each other's you-know-whats! right in the street!" gives me 90s talk radio flashbacks
queer people repeating it gives me an involuntary eye twitch
For folks who think Person of Interest and Minority Report are fiction.
Algo tells Chicago police that area man will be involved in a crime—either as perpetrator or victim. But their actions set in motion the thing they say they were trying to prevent.
There is no compromise with this. There is no common ground. There is no deal to be struck. Millions of our fellow citizens are lost in rebellion against reality.
its been a year since george floyd died and so many people bled and lost eyes and marched with such passion and some small victories were achieved and yet the systemic cruelties for the most part remain intact and so do the propaganda systems that uphold them
For example, when a user files a claim, they record a video on their phone and explain what happened.
Our AI carefully analyzes these videos for signs of fraud. It can pick up non-verbal cues that traditional insurers can't, since they don’t use a digital claims process. (4/7)
“Observation is participation” was an idea coined to describe kinks that required audience participation, like flashing. There are some cases where it might be a worthwhile point. “People came to Pride wearing a thong” isn't it.
I notice that the purity respectability crew is not hopping all over Mardi Gras threatening to call the cops and calling most of the city of NOLA what they're calling those of us who think kink is part of Pride because it was there before us.
@Aranock1 @AnaMardoll It's not even like this is theoretical; we've got basically ALL OF HISTORY showing what an attitude of "This class of person dressing the way they want is inherently sexual and must be banned" leads to.
One thing I feel like is not being mentioned in the current discourse is what is defined as kink, and who does that defining. There are plenty of transphobes who define trans people dressing and presenting as our gender as being kink. And, especially with recent bills, 1/6
Transition is >7x more effective at alleviating gender dysphoria than Advil is at reducing headache pain. Transition is THIS effective even in a trans-hostile society, which is like comparing Advil’s effectiveness for a headache at a heavy metal show.
@AnaMardoll "Uncontroversial"?? Pride is based on some people's belief that queer folks shouldn't be allowed to LIVE, this is such an asinine goal to have. For some people, my existence is controversial! I refuse to try to mitigate that!
This year's discourse feels like a TERF operation and it worries me. So many people talking about how the mere existence of a (clothed!!) penis makes a space sexualized and unsafe.
pointing out here, again, that trans people were not a contentious issue until conservatives lost the war over gay marriage. they immediately pivoted to the next issue they could exploit for their culture war BS. it's a pattern and people need to get wise to it
People keep asking questions like "how can misinfo literacy help when everyone is so polarized" but it completely misdiagnoses what goes on with most people, who have *zero* idea what they are consuming harpers.org/archive/2021/0…
"but the leather stuff is /weird/" YEAH THAT'S WHAT THEY SAID ABOUT ALL OF US KAREN. THAT'S THE ENTIRE FUCKING POINT. THAT'S WHAT /I/ GOT EXPOSED TO AS A YOUNG QUEER: HOW NASTY AND UNNATURAL THEY THINK QUEER SEX IS, AND HOW IT'S ALL THEY THINK ABOUT WHEN THEY SEE US
"no kink at pride" is exactly the same as "no porn on tumblr/ebay/telegram/etsy/twitter/patreon" and the same as SESTA/FOSTA and the same as banning trans people from existing in public. it all comes from the same place, and the sooner you see that the sooner we can break it
I hate how this discourse comes around every year like clockwork at this time. and its the same each time. its never resolved because its unresolvable. its your own internal shames and guilts at war inside you. its why pride exists: to tell that shame to fuck off for a day.
guilt, shame, internal phobias, aversions, these are the emotional cores that get turned into policies and political stances. when enough people share a personal aversion they vote for someone who promises to make whatever it is go away forever.
i don't know how to make it any fucking clearer than this:
"don't hold hands with your boyfriend in public, we all know you have sex with him" → "don't wear your pup hood in public, we all know you have sex in it"
google has been around for longer than gay sex has been legal in all of america. when super mario sunshine was released, a man could be arrested for having sex with another man in the US.
we had to have a fucking supreme court case saying you can't actually put people in Literal Goddamned Jail for having gay sex. that's in living memory of every adult in the fucking country because if it were a person, it wouldn't be old enough to vote yet!!
